What is UIDAI?

The Indian government established the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It operates according to the Aadhaar Act of 2016, officially named the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016. This law provides the legal foundation for UIDAI’s activities.

What is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is a distinctive 12-digit number that UIDAI generates randomly for each individual. It serves two important purposes for Indian residents: it proves who they are (Proof of Identity) and where they live (Proof of Address).

The mission of the UIDAI issued Aadhaar Card is to empower Indian citizens with a unique digital identity, ensuring efficient, transparent, and targeted delivery of services and benefits.

What is the Objectives of UIDAI Aadhaar?

UIDAI’s primary objective is to provide every person living in India with an Aadhaar identification. This special ID has some unique features:

List of Services Available on My Aadhaar Website

The UIDAI “My Aadhaar” website offers a range of services to make it easier for citizens to manage their Aadhaar-related needs. These services include updating Aadhaar card details, retrieving a lost or forgotten Aadhaar number, downloading an e-Aadhaar card, ordering a PVC Aadhaar card, and booking online appointments at Aadhaar Seva Kendras, among others.

Some of these services require users to log in at the official website, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, while many others can be accessed without logging in.

This flexibility ensures that users can access most services even if they have lost their Aadhaar-registered mobile number or cannot use it for any reason.

UIDAI My Aadhaar Login: How to Login to UIDAI MyAadhaar Portal?

To take benefit of the various online UIDAI myAadhaar-related services like Document Updates, downloading Aadhaar, Retrieving EID / Aadhaar number, Verify Email / Mobile, VID Generator, Lock / Unlock Aadhaar, Bank Seeding Status, etc. available on the UIDAI My Aadhaar official website, follow these steps to login to your UIDAI MyAadhaar account:

  • Visit the official website of UIDAI myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
  • Locate and click on the “Login” option on the main page.

  • You’ll be redirected to a new window where you need to enter your login details, which is your Aadhaar Number.
  • Enter the captcha code displayed on the screen.
  • Click on the “Send OTP” option.

  • An OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar Card.
  • Enter the received OTP in the “Enter OTP” field.
  • Click on the “Login” button to access your account.

Once logged in, you’ll have access to your Aadhaar Dashboard, where you can utilize multiple services including bank account linking and ordering a PVC Aadhaar card.

UIDAI Download Aadhaar Card Online

It is important to have a copy of the UIDAI issued Aadhaar Card with them, either a physical copy of it or a digital copy. Both of them same acceptance. In order to download your Aadhaar Card online through the official website of UIDAI, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/uidai.gov.in, follow the steps provided below:

  • Start by visiting the official UIDAI portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
  • On the main page, locate and select the ‘Download Aadhaar‘ option.

You’ll be presented with three methods to retrieve your Aadhaar:

  1. Using your 12-digit Aadhaar number
  2. Using your 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) number
  3. Using your 28-digit Enrollment ID (EID) number
  • Choose your preferred method by clicking the corresponding radio button.
  • Then, enter the selected identification number in the designated field.
  • Enter the captcha code displayed on the screen and proceed by clicking ‘Send OTP‘.

  • You’ll receive a One-Time Password on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  • Enter this OTP in the designated area for verification purposes.
  • After successful verification, click ‘Download Aadhaar‘. The file will be downloaded as a password-protected PDF.
  • To access the PDF, you’ll need to enter a specific password. This password consists of the first four letters of your name in uppercase, followed by your year of birth. For instance, if your name is Alice and you were born in 1985, your password would be ALIC1985.
  • Once opened, you can either print the Aadhaar card or utilize the digital version as needed. It’s important to note that this downloaded PDF carries the same legal validity as the physical card.

Update Aadhaar Card 

UIDAI provides the UIDAI Aadhaar update services. It can be download via:

  1. Online Method (Only POI, and POA)
  2. Offline Method (Name, Date of Birth, Gender, Mobile Number, Email, Address, or Biometric)

To modify or update your Aadhaar details offline, including your name, birth date, gender, mobile number, email address, residential address, or biometric data (photo/iris/fingerprint), you’ll need to schedule an appointment online and then visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra in person.

Note: All the relevant Aadhaar information can be updated by visiting the Aadhaar Seva Kendra in person, but UIDAI has also provided an Aadhaar Update Process through online mediums. The online UIDAI Aadhaar update is limited to Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) only. How to Update Aadhaar Card Offline?

To update your Aadhaar card offline, follow the steps provided below:

  • Visit the official UIDAI website (uidai.gov.in)
  • Navigate to “My Aadhaar” and select “Book an Appointment

  • Enter your city or location and proceed to book an appointment
  • Now, provide your mobile number.
  • Enter the Captcha Code, and click on “Get OTP” button..

  • Now, click on “Select Enrollment Type” and choose “Update Existing Aadhaar Details” from the dropdown menu.
  • Then, click on the Preview button.

  • Input your Aadhaar number and your name as it appears on your Aadhaar card.
  • Select the details you wish to update from the option Name, Date of Birth, Gender, Mobile Number, Email ID, Address, or Biometric by ticking the appropriate boxes.

  • Review the information provided and click on ‘Confirm’.

  • Now, choose your state, city, and preferred Aadhaar Seva Kendra branch.

  • Select a convenient date and time slot for your appointment.

  • Proceed to the payment option (online payment is recommended).
  • Pay the required fee of Rs. 50 for updating your details.

  • After successful payment, download and print the application form.
  • On your scheduled appointment date and time, visit the selected Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
  • Bring the printed application form with you.
  • Submit the form to the authorities at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
  • The authorities will process your request to update the requested details linked to your Aadhaar.

How to Update Aadhaar Card Online?

As we know that, the Aadhaar online update services are limited to updating only Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents. Let’s understand how to update these Aadhaar Details online using UIDAI’s official portal, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.

  • Open your web browser and go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
  • Locate and click on the “Document Update” section on the homepage.

  • Then, click on “Login with OTP” option.

  • Then, upload your Proof of Identity document (follow format and size guidelines).

  • You’ll receive a confirmation message upon successful submission.
  • Download and save the acknowledgment receipt for your records.

What is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It captures both demographic data (name, address, date of birth, gender) and biometric data (fingerprints, iris scan, facial photograph) of Indian residents. It serves as a proof of identity and address throughout India.

Is getting Aadhaar compulsory?

While Aadhaar is not mandatory for all Indian residents, it is practically essential as it is required for many government services, welfare schemes, filing tax returns, and banking services. The Supreme Court has ruled that Aadhaar cannot be made mandatory for private services but is required for government subsidies and benefits.

Can biometrics be updated in Aadhaar?

Yes, biometrics can be updated in Aadhaar. Updates are required in cases where: Fingerprints or iris scans have become unclear (especially in elderly people). Biometric in children turning 5 or 15 years old is mandatory update. Updates must be done in person at an Aadhaar enrollment center.

Can date of birth be updated in Aadhaar?

Yes, date of birth can be updated in Aadhaar, but with certain conditions: Only one update is allowed that must be supported by valid documents (birth certificate, passport, etc.) It can be done online through the UIDAI website or at an enrollment center.

What is the fee for Aadhaar updates?

New Aadhaar Enrollment: Free of charge. Mandatory Biometric Updates: For ages 5 to under 7 years: Free. For ages 7 to under 15 years: Rs. 100. For ages 15 to under 17 years: Free. What is the process to get an Aadhaar letter, if misplaced or lost?

To Get an Aadhaar letter you can download an e-Aadhaar from the UIDAI website. Order a reprint through the UIDAI website (Rs. 50 fee) or visit an enrollment center for a printed copy.

Can one enrol for Aadhaar from anywhere in India?

Yes, Aadhaar enrollment is location-independent. You can visit any authorized enrollment center in India, regardless of your residential address.

Do original documents need to be brought for Aadhaar updates?

Yes, original documents must be presented along with self-attested photocopies for any demographic updates. The operator will verify originals against the copies.

How long does an Aadhaar update take?

Aadhaar updates typically take: 3-5 working days for demographic updates and up to 7 working days for biometric updates. In some cases, Aadhaar update can take upto 90 days. Aadhaar update status can be checked using the Update Request Number (URN).

How many Aadhaar numbers can be linked to one mobile number?

There is no restriction on number of Aadhaar that can be linked with one mobile number. Still UIDAI advised to link your own mobile number with your Aadhaar to better get access of various OTP based authentication services.

What if mobile number registered in Aadhaar is lost/changed?

In such cases you can update the Aadhaar linked mobile number by visiting the Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

What fields can be updated in Aadhaar?

On the Aadhaar Card, name, birth date, gender, mobile number, email address, residential address, and biometric data (photo/iris/fingerprint) can be updated.

How are children's biometrics handled?

For children below the age of 5 years, no biometrics is required. At the age of 5 years, it is mandatory to update biometric (fingerprints and iris). At the age of15 years, another mandatory biometric update is required.

Can appointments at ASKs be rescheduled or canceled?

Yes, you can cancel your appointment to Aadhaar Seva Kendra and book a new appointment to a different date and time online.

What if name or date of birth doesn't match in Aadhaar and PAN while linking?

In this case, check which document doesnot contain right name or date of birth and proceed to update the name or date of birth in that document.

Is Aadhaar Card Valid as Date of Birth Proof by EPFO?

No. Recently, EPFO notified that Aadhaar is primarily an identity verification tool and not a proof of birth.

I recently updated my date of birth in Aadhaar but it got rejected. What should I do?

In such case, check rejection reason in update history and ensure documents meet the requirement. then, submit a fresh update request with correct documents.

Can I update my mobile number online in Aadhaar?

No, mobile number updates require in-person verification on enrollment center. For this, book an appointment to Aadhaar Seva Kendra, provide biometric authentication, submit new number and pay update fee.

What is the validity period of an Aadhaar number?

Aadhaar numbers are valid for life.

Can I update someone else's Aadhaar details on their behalf?

No, because most of the Aadhaar update requires biometric authentication and person need to be physically present. Exceptions for minors where parents are required to update their children's Aadhaar.

How to Book an Appointment to UIDAI Aadhaar Seva Kendra?

At Aadhaar Seva Kendra, you can schedule appointments for various essential Aadhaar-related services, including new Aadhaar enrollment for first-time applicants, mandatory biometric updates for children after turning 5 and 15 years old, demographic data updates (such as name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number, or email), biometric updates (fingerprints, iris scan, or facial photograph), mobile number addition or update to receive Aadhaar services via phone, lost UID/EID retrieval assistance, and Aadhaar PVC card printing.

The center also assists with linking your mobile number to Aadhaar, updating documents, and provides support for failed Aadhaar generation cases.

Special priority services are available for senior citizens, differently-abled individuals, and pregnant women. 

To book an appointment at UIDAI Aadhaar Seva Kendra, follow the steps provided below:

  • Visit the official UIDAI website uidai.gov.in.
  • On the homepage, locate “Get Aadhaar” section and click on “Book an Appointment“.

  • The next page will present several options. Here, choose the service that best fits your needs.
  • Then, enter your mobile number and captcha code.
  • After that, click on “Generate OTP” to receive OTP on your Aadhaar registered mobile number.

  • Next, click on the “Select Enrollment Type” option and select one of the options among New Aadhaar and Update Existing Aadhaar Details.
  • Then click on “Preview” button.

  • Now, enter your Aadhaar number and Name on Aadhaar.
  • Tick the details you want to update, such as your mobile number, name, gender, email ID, address etc.
  • Click “Preview,” and reconfirm the information.

  • Again, click on “Confirm” button.
